A seafarer spends several months on board, carefully and efficiently fulfilling his duties. He makes sure that everything is running smoothly, his time is effectively managed, and he maintains a great relationship with his colleagues.
One thing that he is likely to forget is to take care of his own health. Even before a seafarer boards his vessel, he needs to prepare his own medicine kit. After all, you want to be prepared for any medical emergency. Here are some of the basic medicines every seafarer must have.
Paracetamol is one of the most basic medicine anyone should have. It is commonly used to treat mild to moderate pain like simple body aches, toothache, headaches, and fever. One 500-mg tablet of paracetamol can be taken once every four to six hours or as prescribed by a doctor. Some of the most popular paracetamol brands are Biogesic, Panadol, RiteMED, Tylenol, among others.
Loperamide is taken to control diarrhea. A seafarer should always have this ready in case diarrhea occurs, whether it’s because of eating bad food or drinking contaminated water. If you’re suffering from diarrhea, take one to two capsules after each loose bowel movement. Be careful not to overdose as you can only take maximum of 8 capsules per day only.
When suffering from diarrhea, make sure you also drink lots of water to hydrate yourself.
Some of the most popular loperamide brands are Diatabs and Immodium.
Don’t forget to have cough medicines in your medicine kit. Cough medicines are essential especially when you’re traveling to cold places where you can easily catch viruses. You can choose to buy cough medicines in capsule format or in syrup format, depending on your preference. Some of the most popular cough medicine brands are Solmux, Robitussin, Tuseran, and Bisolvon.
Antihistamines are medicines that can help you manage allergic rhinitis and other allergies. Allergic attacks can happen anytime since allergens are present everywhere. Dust, pollen, certain food can trigger a reaction and it’s important that you have antihistamines on hand.
Antihistamines usually come in tablet or syrup format. Some of the most popular antihistamine brands in the market include Alnix, Allerta, and Claritin.
What would a medicine kit be without your trusted cold medicines? Cold can be annoying and may cause work disruption. When one suffers from cold, other discomfort may occur like sore throat, sneezing, low-grade fever, etc.
Just like cough medicines, cold medication can come in tablet, capsule or syrup format. Some of the most popular cold medicines in the market today include Neozep, Decolgen, and Bioflu,
Most important of all, you need to bring your maintenance medicines. If you’re suffering from any illness that requires maintenance medicines, you need to stock up as much as you can. The last thing you want to happen is you run out of your maintenance meds while you’re in the middle of the ocean.
Always be prepared and take care of your health. Happy sailing!
